Therapeutic Groups

We welcome new group participants! Participants must be referred to a group through a ShelterCare therapist. If you have any questions about the process, feel free to ask. Regular, consistent, participation in groups is encouraged. All groups are held in person at our 499 W 4th Ave location, unless specified.

Linet Armstrong’s group:

Mindful Movement and Instant Relaxation

“Instant Relaxation” is a 13-week skills-building group focused on developing the skill of being able to relax one’s body even in the midst of external stressors.  This skill can help us not only relax our bodies, but also calm our minds, improving our ability to respond to and cope with stressful situations.  Sessions may start with gentle movement to warm up and to practice mindful awareness in the moment.  We will next review the skill taught the previous week, then move to the skill for this week.  Each new skill builds on the previous skill to develop the ability to relax instantly.  The group is offered in a hybrid format, meaning participants can attend in person or by telehealth, as suits their needs.

Teresa Coppola’s group:

Women’s Trauma Group

This is a women-only group that will use psychoeducation, discussion, and activities to increase confidence in social engagement, learn new coping skills, and gain an understanding of the effects of complex trauma on mind & body. Topics can include: communication, self-care, boundaries, and codependency.

This will be a closed group (meaning no new participants will be admitted after the 2nd week).

Michael Morrison’s Groups:

Adult Resilience Group:

The Adult Resilience Group (ARG) explores how to successfully navigate difficult times and overcome barriers to well-being. ARG provides the structure that is often missing from meaningful well-being programs by addressing burnout, fatigue, impaired focus, and depersonalization resulting from emotional exhaustion. ARG explores these themes through a psychobiology lens of stress and well-being, supportive environments, personal values, meaningful relationships, and self-care.

Emotional Regulation Group:

The Emotional Regulation Group (ERG) is intended to help increase your understanding and knowledge about anxiety and depression, provide you with lifelong tools you can use while facing triggering situations, and provide you with some skills to recognize and manage symptoms you may be experiencing. ERG is not intended to get rid of your anxiety and/or depression. Rather, our hope is that we provide you with a jumping board from which to integrate skills into your daily life in the service of reducing your anxiety and/or depression.

Gamer’s Group:

The Gamers Group (GG) is designed to explore various types of games in a warm and friendly social environment. We will be learning a little about the psychology of gaming along the way while practicing a ‘learn-as-we-go’ philosophy. You will develop skills and knowledge throughout your gaming experience as we discover together why ‘play’ is an essential element for well-being and growth. We will have various genres of both tabletop and video games available for exploration.

Lizzy Cyrus’ Groups:

Healthy Lifestyles Co-Occurring:

Use of group discussion and material that helps increase understanding of the interconnected challenges with symptom management of more than one diagnosis.

Healing with Art:

Participants use a variety of arts/crafts to explore symptom management in a supportive space with a focus on the process of creating and building self-awareness.
