Consumer Council Corner: Spring 2018

Katharine Ryan (L), Emma Swanson (C), and Consumer Council President Cindy Williams (R) representing ShelterCare at Housing Opportunity Day!

I was pleased to be a part of the Oregon Housing Alliance that went to Salem.

This was my first time at the Capitol building. We advocated for a bill to help with housing opportunities, and I am pleased to say that the bill HB 4007 has passed. It will increase the document recording fee from $20 to $60. Not only does that money go to prevent homelessness, but one in four dollars will also serve veterans. It also creates a first-time home buyer savings account.

On a personal note, this experience was a great one. I was able to learn more about how bills get introduced and the steps to make them pass. I also learned about the legislature, talked to Senators and, overall, I learned to take an interest in politics.

The second thing I am excited about is the turnout of the March 16 Consumer Council meeting. We partnered with ShelterCare to create a picnic-themed Open House for this meeting, where different ShelterCare departments came together to introduce themselves to consumers. There was lots of great food and socializing!

Thank you all for your support!
