Consumer Council Corner: Cindy Reflects on Holidays, 2018

Several years ago, my holidays were a lot different than they are today. All I had were the clothes on my back, my tent, and my dog there to comfort me. Something I remember most about my holidays while homeless was begging for change, and how cold it was.

Today, holidays are much better. I have a warm, safe place to call home. I have good friends to spend time with, and I have children and grandchildren I have rebuilt relationships with. Last week I got my Driver’s License back after 10 years without it, and I can now be the Nana I’ve always wanted to be for my grandchildren. In a few weeks, I’m excited to take them to the Portland Zoo. My life is filled with love, positivity, and good people. Although it can still get lonely sometimes, I wake up everyday feeling blessed to be alive, clean, and have a roof over my head.

Something else I am thankful for is Consumer Council, because it is gives me hope and purpose. Four  years ago, I walked into my first Consumer Council meeting for free food, and today I am the President. If you were to tell me that two years ago, I wouldn’t have believed you! 2018 has especially been a great year for Consumer Council. We had many great speakers, including Mayor Lucy Vinis, fun social activities such as bingo, an indoor picnic, ice cream social, Thanksgiving potluck, and more! It’s been especially great watching Consumer Council grow throughout the year, and hear the thoughts and ideas of new members. We also worked together to give back to our community by participating in the Out of the Darkness walk, and held a shoe drive for those experiencing homelessness.

It’s been a great year for me personally, and professionally, and I’m excited about what more is to come in 2019.
