Uhlhorn Program
Uhlhorn residents are survivors of acquired brain injury who need training and support to prepare them for living in the community. The goal of the Uhlhorn Program is to encourage residents to reach the highest level of independence possible.

More than 5,000 head injuries occur in Oregon each year with 500 of these individuals suffering severe and permanent disability. Rehabilitation therapies and treatments allow many survivors to return to independent living in the community. The Uhlhorn Program is a critical "link" to independence.

In 2000, Uhlhorn received an Enterprise Foundation Award for excellence in providing affordable housing and support services to a disabled population. It is the only program in Oregon that offers supported housing services in individual apartments for low income survivors of brain injury.

Clients of the Uhlhorn Program reside in one of two locations, the Uhlhorn Apartments or the River Kourt Apartments, depending on their needs and level of independence.

Uhlhorn Apartments
Residents of the 19 subsidized Uhlhorn Apartment units participate in a transitional program that provides basic skills training from a broad menu of options. The challenges resulting from head injury are as individual as the accidents and illnesses that caused the injury.

Residents of the Uhlhorn Apartments develop an individualized program that includes counseling, advocacy, health and hygiene assistance, skill building and training for independence.

Skill building classes and support groups for the Uhlhorn Program cover a multitude of topics including money management, medication management, anger management, memory skills development, meal planning and preparation, budgeting, and community orientation. Program participants use the program activities to build skills, increase their independence and graduate to a more independent community living situation.

OUR STORIES -

Steve's Story
Steve

A few things about Steve: he’s a modest man, honest about his flawed past, grateful for a second chance, and always ready to talk. A resident of ShelterCare’s Uhlhorn program for two years, Steve is an unexpected survivor of a traumatic blow to the head that rendered him comatose for three weeks.  He grew up in Oregon, attending school in Glide and Oakland, and received certification as a pipe welder at Lane Community College.  When he was released from the hospital, he moved in with his sister for nine months, until her plans to adopt a child made it difficult for him to stay.

That’s when ShelterCare stepped in. Without the Uhlhorn Program, Steve says he would have been living on the streets and “I’d probably be dead by now.” The program has given him a chance to recover, strengthen his family relationships, and stay clear of the drug habits that disrupted his life before.
